67 ‘MINIs’ are coming


Members of the Atlanta-based auto club MINIs & COFFEE GEORGIA are sheduled to visit eastern Kentucky over the weekend, with stops in Whitesburg Saturday night at CANE Kitchen and Kentucky Mist distillery.

As many as 67 “MINI Cooper” automobiles are expected to arrive in Letcher County from the Atlanta, Georgia area on Saturday as part of a tour put together by the non-profit organization “Backroads of Appalachia.”

A “MINI Cooper” is an automobile that has been produced since the year 2000 by the German automotive company BMW. It comes in three- or fivedoor hatchback models and is hugely popular with its owners.

The owners and passengers of the MINI Coopers scheduled to arrive in Whitesburg Saturday evening are members of the Atlanta-based club “MINIs & COFFEE-GEORGIA.”

The Georgia drivers are scheduled to begin their trip at 6:30 a.m. on Friday when they meet at a Mc- Donald’s Restaurant outside of Atlanta. After arriving at Cumberland Gap National Historical Park near Middlesboro around 11:15 a.m. on Friday, they plan to eat lunch at Pine Mountain State Park near Pineville at !2:30 p.m. that day and will then move into the Harlan County for the night.

After a day of driving across Pine Mountain and other backroads in Harlan and Letcher County on Saturday, group members are scheduled to have dinner at CANE Kitchen in Whitesburg around 7 p.m. They will then visit the Kentucky Mist moonshine distillery in Whitesburg, where owner Colin Fultz will demonstrate the distilling process.

“Backroads of Appalachia,” based in Lynch and organized by Eolia native Erik Hubbard, has been part of a number of successful tourism events related to the topography and natural beauty of the mountains of eastern Kentucky and southwestern Virginia.

“Use what you’ve got in life and run with it,” Hubbard said.
