8-year-old takes gun to school

A sheriff’s deputy has filed a juvenile petition in Letcher District Court against an eight-yearold student who brought a gun to school last week.

Deputy Sheriff Bert Slone said authorities were alerted about the child having a gun at Martha Jane Potter Elementary School after a parent notified Principal Linda Hall. He said the situation was quickly brought under control on February 26.

“Because of that information, the principal was able to stop what was going on,” said Slone, a school resource officer. “I hope parents will always come forward with information as quickly as they obtained it in this situation.”

Slone said the unloaded weapon was brought from the child’s home. He said the student has been removed from the school, and that the case is still being investigated.
