On May 8, 10 members of the Letcher County AARP Chapter #3634 met at Camp Nathanael at Emmalena for a work day as part of AARP’s National Day of Service. Each year on the second Thursday in May all chapters across the nation participate in a community service event. Thousands of AARP members take part in a particular activity that shows the meaning of the AARP motto: “To Serve, Not To Be Served.”

The Letcher County chapter has participated in other activities on this day such as gathering food for the Food Pantry, cleanup and planting flowers at community parks, helping with meal delivery at the senior citizens centers, visiting the Veterans Home and Letcher Manor, or simply taking a neighbor to the grocery store.

The local AARP chapter meets at 6 p.m. the third Thursday of each month (except September) at the Blackey Senior Citizens Center. For more information on how to join this chapter, chapter activities and its involvement in the community, call AARP President Berma Matthews at 633-7874.
