Airport is focus of meeting

Have you heard that Letcher County is working to get an airport, but you’re not sure where it would be located or whether it’s even needed? Do you want to know how big the airport would be and who would pay the cost of construction?

If your answer is yes, then you should attend a public meeting being held in Whitesburg next Monday (July 23) to discuss the development of the proposed airport. The meeting, which is scheduled to last from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m., will be held in the banquet room of Pine Mountain Grill.

The meeting is being sponsored by the Letcher County Airport Board. The board has been working to persuade state and federal officials to build a general aviation airport here with a runway of at least 4,000 feet. The project is estimated to cost $12 million, 95 percent of which would be paid for with federal funds.

Identified as possible sites for the runway are the old Whitesburg Municipal Airport near Colson, a site at Carbon Glow, and a tract at Stamper’s Branch off Route 7 in Isom.

Persons wishing more information about next week’s meeting may call Joe DePriest, chairman of the airport board, at 633-0279.
