All elementary schools will have P.E. next year

Physical education classes will be available to all elementary and middle school students in the Letcher County school system next year.

Letcher County Schools Superintendent Anna C. Craft said Arlie Boggs, Beckham Bates, Cowan and Letcher elementary schools already have physical education classes through the Save the Children program. The Letcher County Board of Education has approved four new positions that will provide fitness classes to the Fleming-Neon, Martha Jane Potter, and West Whitesburg elementary schools — and to Whitesburg Middle School.

“We wanted to make sure every school had P.E. for kids,” said Craft. “I think it is important for their development and well-being of their bodies.”

Craft said physical education classes are already available at the high school level, and that a need existed at the elementary level.

The board approved establishing the four positions at a specialcalled meeting on June 5.

Roger Martin, district finance officer, said the 187-day positions will be paid according to rank and years of experience.

Martin said the positions will be funded through Title I stimulus money. Craft said grant money will also be used to fund the positions.
