Alpha Natural Resources Inc. said this week that its founder and the chairman of its board of directors, Michael J. Quillen, will step down following the company’s 2012 annual meeting in May.
The Bristol, Va.-based company said Quillen has chosen not to stand for reelection at the company’s May 17 shareholder meeting and the board has selected CEO Kevin S. Crutchfi eld to succeed him.
The 63-year-old Quillen formed Alpha Natural Resources in 2002 and led the company through its initial public offering in 2005 and more than a dozen mergers and acquisitions. He has served as chairman since 2006 and as a board member since 2004.
In the last 10 years, the company has grown to become one of the nation’s largest coal suppliers and the sixth-largest coal supplier worldwide.
“Alpha has gone from a concept on a piece of paper to a global leader in the coal industry, thanks to Mike’s vision, leadership and caring for people,” Crutchfield said in a statement. “While we will miss his wisdom and counsel on the board, his legacy at Alpha will endure.”
