AmeriCorps week marked

This week is being marked as AmeriCorps Week to show appreciation for current and former AmeriCorps volunteers. AmeriCorps-Vista is part of the Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency that provides volunteers to organizations working on education, public safety, health, and the environment. Evan Smith serves as the AmeriCorps volunteer in Letcher County.

AmeriCorps-VISTA joined forces with the Office of Surface Mining in 2002 to create the Appalachian Coal Country Water- shed Team. The team works in eight Appalachian states to restore watersheds that were devastated by pre-regulatory coal mining. The members of the team educate communities about water quality issues, set up citizen water monitoring programs, reclaim abandoned mine lands, and write grant proposals.
