Annual spring band concert held

The Letcher County Central Junior High School Bands performed their annual spring concert on April 19 at LCC.

The concert included a performance by the Chamber Winds ensemble.

Chamber Winds is a pilot program that began in the fall. Select middle school students participated in this program and practiced one day a week after school. The focus of this program is to develop student musicianship through performance in small groups. Chamber Winds consist of a brass en- semble and a woodwind ensemble. The brass ensemble featured Presley Lloyd, Drew Raleigh, Waylon Mink, Austin Barton, Lennie Holbrook and Adam Howard. The brass ensemble were joined by two guest performers from the LCC High School Band, Aaron Tolliver and Cory Baker. They performed “Danny Boy” under the direction of Andy Buchholz.

The woodwind ensemble performed “A Conversation Piece”, which was completely improvised, and “Contre Qui, Rose” under the direction of Amanda Wright. The woodwind ensemble featured Josh Stephens, Alex Fickey, Dalton Bates, Michael Holbrook, Anthony Banks and Aaron Fields.

The Junior High School Band is divided into two bands. The “West” Band features the advanced bands from Fleming-Neon Elementary and West Whitesburg Elementary Schools. Under the direction of Dr. Jason Griffith, this band performed “Mount Vernon March”, “Fires of Mazama” and “Nocturnal Dances”.

The “South” Band features the advanced bands from Arlie Boggs Elementary and Martha Jane Potter Elementary. Under the direction of Dan Brennan and Andy Buchholz they also performed “Fires of Mazama” as well as “Forward March”, “As Winds Dance” and “Apache”.

Twenty-six member of these combined bands were selected to the KMEA All District Band. They will be leaving Friday to spend the weekend in Paintsville for two days of rehearsals followed by the All District Concert on Sunday, April 26, at the Ramada Inn. This event is free of charge and the public is invited to attend.

On Thursday, April 23, the LCC Junior High Bands and the LCC Senior High School Band will participate in the KMEA Concert Band Competition at the Mountain Arts Center in Prestonsburg. This event is also open to the public.
