Arch gives money for Eolia park

Residents of Eolia have received a gift from the Arch Coal Foundation and Cumberland River Coal Company to fund major improvements to the Eolia Community Park.

The grant, the amount of which wasn’t released, was announced by Lively Hope Inc., a non-profit organization which says its goal is to give the citizens of Eolia somewhere to socialize and gather in a safe environment. The organization says it is working toward building a recreation center with indoor and outdoor facilities. With this grant, phase one of the two-phase project can be completed.

Phase One will include a full basketball court and circular walking track that is 6-feet wide and 1,125-feet long, three picnic sheds with benches and barbecue grills, one of which is already completed. The sheds will be available on a first come, first serve basis to the community. Phase one should be completed by the end of 2008.

A tennis court and playground is scheduled to be added to the park by the end of 2009, complete with slides, swings and other durable equipment for children.

Volunteers in Eolia and surrounding areas are being asked to keep the park clean and litter free. Residents or civic groups who would like to volunteer to the projectare asked to call Kenny Spangler at 276-219-7262 for more information.
