Arcie Martin Whitaker, 81, of Jenkins, died December 21 at Letcher Manor Nursing Home.
A son of the late John C. and Vina Rose Whitaker, he was the widower of Ola Mae Roberts Whitaker. He was also preceded in death by five brothers, James “Jack” Whitaker, Estes Whitaker, Pat Wayne Whitaker, Billie Mae Whitaker and Marcus Whitaker, and two sisters, Mae Reed and Valma Johnson.
Mr. Whitaker was a longtime member and a 35- year deacon of Payne Gap Freewill Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a retail clerk at Pound Hardware for more than 30 years. He enjoyed reading the Bible, gardening, canning and raising flowers, and was an avid University of Kentucky Wildcat fan.
Surviving are a daughter, Anita Whitaker Holbrook of Payne Gap; a son, John Whitaker and wife Susie of Madison, Ind.; four grandchildren, Jessica Bentley and husband Chuck of Russell Springs, Jaime Yates and husband Jason of Wise, Va., and Daniel Whitaker and Rebecca Whitaker, both of Madison, Ind.; a great-granddaughter, Haley Grace Bentley of Russell Springs; three brothers, Lum Whitaker, Clarence Whitaker and Russell Whitaker; two sisters, Caroline Mullins and Wanda Jean Wright; a number of nieces and nephews; and special friends, Jay Bird Roberts and Don Bailey.
Funeral services were held on December 22 at Baker Funeral Home in Pound, Va. Burial was in the Whitaker Cemetery at Payne Gap.
