ARH workers keep benefits, get pay raises

About 2,200 hospital workers, including 219 in Whitesburg, have a new three-year union contract with Appalachian Regional Healthcare.

Members of the United Steelworkers ratified the contract on March 27 after about six weeks of negotiations. The union represents all employees except registered nurses and management at nine hospitals in eastern Kentucky and southern West Virginia.

Donna Fields, president of Local 14568 in Whitesburg, said employees kept all of the benefits they had previously, and will receive pay raises as a result of the contract. She said those raises will include workers who were started at lower wages in the former contract because of hire dates, who will get additional raises to put them at the hospital’s standard wage level.

Complete details of the new contract were not available Tuesday.
