DICTIONARY PROJECT — The Whitesburg Rotary Club recently distributed dictionaries to every third grader in Letcher County as part of the club’s literacy project for the year. The dictionaries were provided through a donation to the Dictionary Project, a nonprofit organization that helps students be good writers, active readers and creative thinkers by providing them with their own dictionary. Rotarians Bessie Shepherd and Barbara Ison are pictured with students from Burdine Elementary School. More than 2.5 million students were provided dictionaries in 2008 from people who live in their town. An additional 4 million third graders in the U.S. would benefit from having a dictionary they can take home and use to expand their vocabulary. Individuals and organizations can make dictionaries available to students through donations to the Dictionary Project. For more information, contact a Whitesburg Rotary Club member.
