Mike Mullins, longtime executive director of the Hindman Settlement School, has died. He was 63.
Mullins died Sunday after being stricken while exercising. Knott County Coroner Jeff Blair told the Lexington Herald-Leader that Mullins had a history of heart trouble.
Since becoming head of the Knott County school in 1977, Mullins helped shape it into a regional cultural and educational center.
Mullins helped establish the annual Appalachian Writers Workshop and Appalachian Family Folk Week at the school, resulting in wide-ranging networks of authors and musicians.
