Lena Cantrell NcNicholas, originally from Pound, Va., and now living in Charlottesville, Va., will read from her first published collection of poems and stories, Patchwork,
Wednesday, Aug. 4, at 10 a.m. at The Clapboard House/Appalachian Showcase, 207 West Main Street, Wise, Va.
An award-winning poet, she was graduated from Radford College with a bachelor’s degree in social studies and a minor in English.
She taught in Virginia, Kentucky and Maryland before going to Venezuela to teach. There she met and married George McNicholas; they had three sons and later moved to Lagos, Nigeria. She lived outside of the U.S. for 15 years.
McNicholas’s writing includes poetry, memoirs, essays, short stories and vignettes. She has been published in Appalachian
Heritage, Coalfield Progress,
Bristol Herald Courier, Appalachian
Clinch Mountain Review,
Wind-The Hindman Edition,
The Blue Ridge Chapter of the Virginia Writers Club, Inc., and the Poetry Society of Virginia.
She has received numerous awards for her original work and was Poet of the Month for A Magazine,
December. She is a member of the Appalachian Poets and Writers, the Blue Ridge Chapter of the Virginia Writers Club, Inc., and the Poetry Society of Virginia.
