Authorities say a 50-year-old Letcher County man was murdered late Monday night or early Tuesday morning inside his home at the Mountain Breeze Apartment complex in the Jenkins community of Burdine.
The victim has been identified as Michael Lowe, who had been living in the apartments since a home he had shared with his mother at Thornton burned a few years ago.
Letcher County Coroner Perry Fowler said Lowe was found stabbed to death and that authorities are operating under the assumption that he knew the killer.
“No motive is known at this time,” Fowler told The Mountain Eagle Tuesday night. “And it doesn’t appear to have been a robbery.”
Fowler said that while Lowe’s body was sent to the state medical examiner’s office in Frankfort for autopsy for official determination of the cause of death, there is no reason to believe the case won’t be a murder investigation based on evidence collected at the scene on Tuesday afternoon.
“Obviously, somebody came into his home and killed him,” Fowler said. “The bad thing is a murderer is still out there at large.”
The body was apparently discovered by family members. A Kentucky State Police trooper happened to be at the apartment complex at the time and immediately began an investigation.
Fowler estimates the murder took place very early Tuesday morning, “probably just a little after midnight.”
