In case you haven’t noticed them, Letcher County is getting more ‘barn quilts’ painted and hung every month. We are getting close to having 70 of these beautiful works of art on display in various locations all over the county.
Here are six new quilts to add to my previous listings. If you hung a barn quilt that I still have not included, please call me at 633-2362 to have it listed.
The new quilts are: Etta Long on Ramey’s Fork at Cromona painted a 3×3 four patch featuring a Cardinal, Strawberry, Dresden Plate and Fall Leaves; Judith Vermillion painted a 4×4 Crazy Quilt square for the entrance to Westwood in Whitesburg; Ked Sanders and Bessie Shepherd painted and 8×8 Sunbonnet Sue and Overall Sam for the Mountains of Scraps Building on Highway 15 at Dry Fork; Ked Sanders painted a 4×4 Pot of Flowers with Butterfly”for Gerry Haynes’s home on Craft’s Colly; Bessie Shepherd and Ked Sanders painted a 4×4 Sunbonnet Sue and Overall Sam quilt square for Georgia and Bobby Phillips to hang at their home at 79 Dinah Blair Road on Cowan; and Ked Sanders painted a 3×3 Stars and Stripes patriotic square to hang at this home in Jenkins.
If you would like to paint a quilt square to display at your home, place of business, or somewhere in your community, call Ann Bradley at the Letcher County Extension Office at 633- 2362 to get information on recommendations on the type of plywood to use, paint suggestions or quilt pattern ideas. There are no set rules for size, quilt design, etc., just use your imagination.
You can also use regular plywood, if you make sure to seal all the surfaces before you apply the paint and then use the recommended top coat to seal in your colors.
