Letcher County Central High School defeated cross-county rival Jenkins 89 to 54 last week to wind up its regular season with a wonloss record of 6-19.
The Cougars entered 53rd District Tournament play at Alice Lloyd College last night (Tuesday) against the Cordia Lions, a team that defeated Letcher Central twice before — in December and on February 13. The winner of last night’s game will advance to meet Knott County Central in the championship round on February 28, as the district has only three teams.
Last week’s loss dropped Jenkins to 1-23 for the regular season. On Monday, the Cavaliers fell to Shelby Valley in the opening round of the 59th District Tournament, 86 to 33.
Game statistics for the Cavaliers’ final two games were not available.
Joby Johnson scored 20 points to lead Letcher Central to the win over Jenkins. He was followed by Ryan Lebrun with 15 points and Parker Williams with 9 points. Dylan Webb and Bodie Bentley each scored 8 points for the Cougars, while Isaiah Adams had seven points. Scoring 5 points each were Matthew Dicks and Kaden Adams. Max Roark, Luke Goins, and Peyton Dixon each scored 3 points. JD McDaniel chipped in two points, and Cooper Bailey added 1 point.
