Classes on beekeeping will be taught on Saturday, Jan. 21, at the First Federal Building of Hazard Community and Technical College.
The classes, presented by the Eastern Kentucky Beekeeping School, begin at 9 a.m. Registration is from 8 to 9 a.m. The fee is $20 by Jan. 16 or $25 at the door and includes refreshments and lunch. Discounts for families and school age children are available.
Classes will include beginning beekeeping, monitoring and controlling varroa mites, honey bee anatomy, managing honey bees for maximum production, queen rearing, value added beekeeping (making beeswax candles, lotion bars and lip balm), planting crops for honey production, swarming, dealing with black bear conflicts, cooking with honey, the biology of honey bee pollination, making nucs and splits, and installing queens and re-queening.
The Letcher County Extension Service will run a van to Hazard at 8 a.m. To reserve a seat, call Shad Baker at 633-2362. Seating is limited to 14 people.
