Cowan Community Center will host a group of Berea College faculty and board members on Friday, August 1, beginning at 12:30 p.m.
The group is taking part in the Appalachian Tour, a bi-annual event coordinated by the Lloyal Jones Appalachian Center which takes new faculty members and other officials of Berea College on a tour of the Appalachian region from which they draw their students. In the words of Dr. Chris Green, Director of the Center, “We want the Berea College faculty to gain a deeper sense of what it is like to live in the areas from which their students come, to become more familiar with the resources that are available and the lack of resources, and to hear what Berea College means to this region.”
One professor who made the tour some years ago said, “The biggest thing the Berea College faculty gains from the tour is to see for themselves what the region is really like, because most of them come from all parts of the world and they haven’t a clue what the region is really like. They come with a preconceived idea that the region is what it has often been portrayed to be by the media.”
Persons who were students at Berea, others who may be considering attending the college, or those who would like to come and share their experiences are welcome to attend. Lunch will be served, and there will be a time for interaction among the guests of the tour and community members. Since lunch is being served, RSVP to Carol Ison at 633- 9831 by Thursday, July 31.
