Beshear getting strong support for plan to overhaul pensions

Teachers and state workers are showing support for Gov. Steve Beshear’s plan to overhaul Kentucky’s pension system.

Several testified during a legislative hearing on Monday that Beshear’s proposal to keep the state’s retirement system from going bankrupt is a step in the right direction.

Beshear’s plan would make small changes to existing employee benefits, but it mostly affects future state workers.

Among other things, it calls for making employees work longer before being eligible for retirement. Under the plan, state employees would have to work 30 years and until at least age 55 to be eligible for full retirement.
