FRANKFORT
Gov. Steve Beshear’s administration is asking Kentucky’s public universities and government agencies to suggest ways they could cut 4 percent of their budgets.
Beshear spokesman Jay Blanton says the governor is forming a plan to deal with the state’s looming budget shortfall and has asked for different scenarios for implementing cuts.
State economists predicted last week that state government will be short about $1.3 billion over the next year and a half.
Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education spokeswoman Sue Patrick tells the Lexington Herald-Leader that 4 percent cuts to the state’s public universities and community and technical colleges would total about $41 million. Patrick says the proposals are due by next week.
