Bid-rig case moved

FRANKFORT

The trial of three men charged with bid-rigging now will be held in Lexington.

U.S. District Judge Karl Forester said in an order filed Tuesday that he is moving the trial out of Covington.

Charged in the case are highway contractor Leonard Lawson, former Transportation Secretary Bill Nighbert and Lawson aide Brian Billings. They’re accused of conspiring to steer about $130 million worth of highway construction contracts to Lawson’s companies. All have entered not guilty pleas.

A previous judge on the case had moved the trial from Frankfort because of pretrial publicity. Forester said since the case was transferred to Covington, publicity has increased there.
