Bill would allow school employees to be active in local board politics

School employees would be able to take part in political campaigns or the office of school board member under a bill approved by the Kentucky House of Representatives.

House Bill 441, approved by a vote of 82-16 on Feb. 20, would amend state school laws “to remove the prohibition regarding employees of local school districts taking part in the management or activities of any political campaign for school board.”

The bill is cosponsored by 17 members of the House, including Ancel Smith (D-92), who represents part of Letcher County.

The bill was received by the Senate on Feb. 21.
