Bill would let counties OK consolidation

A bill to create a framework for Kentucky counties to voluntarily consolidate has cleared a House committee.

The measure is similar to proposals considered several years ago that failed to make it through the General Assembly.

Under the latest bill, a consolidation process could begin through fiscal court ordinance or a petition drive that could result in a special election.

With its 120 counties, Kentucky ranks near the top of the states with the most counties. The bill’s sponsor, Rep. Teddy Edmonds, says multiple counties already share a number of services. He mentioned no situation in which counties are looking to consolidate but stressed that such a process would be strictly voluntary. (AP)
