Bear studies in Letcher County and turkey season will be featured on “Kentucky Afield” television this weekend, Feb. 27 and 28.
In Letcher County, snowy mountainsides set the backdrop for black bear research. Biologists with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, with assistance from University of Kentucky researchers, climb into the bears’ winter dens to count cubs and place radio-tracking collars on hibernating mother bears. Research on bears — one of the forest’s most secretive animals — helps in understanding the growth and travel patterns of these mammals.
Also on the show, host Tim Farmer goes to Trigg County to join Harold Knight and David Hale. The trio focuses on turkey-calling techniques and innovative all-weather equipment to help any hunter take home a trophy.
