Black Sheep Brick Oven Bakery offers free bread

Hemphill

Go to our Facebook page for announcements and pictures posted after each event: www.facebook.com/ pages/ Hemphill- Community-Center, www.facebook.com/Hemphillblacksheep.

Check out our two new websites: www.hemphillcenter.org and www.blacksheepbrickoven.org.

We, here in Hemphill, have a very strong labor history. This is a community built originally to house mining families. I have noticed if you see a hardworking group anywhere in this county or surrounding counties you will very likely find that there are folks from Hemphill, or with roots in our community, working with them.

The Blackjewel Company, that has filed bankruptcy, is no exception. You might have seen Josh Holbrook speaking up for himself and fellow miners on WYMT and other news outlets. We are proud of miners such as Josh from our community. Sadly, they have not been paid their wages and it looks like they may even lose their 401k monies.

We have had a couple of the mining families who worked for an affiliate of Blackjewel visit us in the last week. We were honored to have them with us. We all need to support and pray for these families. Historically this sort of thing has happened over and over. We hope they get what they have worked to have.

We decided to place our unsold bread outside in coolers on Saturday mornings for folks to take. It will be left on the outside stage until a more suitable arrangement can be made to dispense it. Our bread is preservative free so in this heat we hope folks take it on Saturdays before it sits too long in the heat. It will keep almost a week at room temperature. It makes the best toast, grilled cheese, etc. It is made with great attention to bread-making traditions and is made from the finest ingredients we can get. We do not skimp on anything. It will feed the belly and feed the soul. If you are hungry, show up early so you can get a loaf. We want you to have first pick.

Very important note: John Ng’s Four Seasons Martial Arts will be meeting henceforth until further notice on Sunday evenings at 5 p.m. Master Frank Sexton is the instructor.

Narcotics Anonymous (NA) meetings are being held at Hemphill Community Center. We are proud to host these meeting for those on the recovery road. Meetings will be held on Wednesdays at 6 p.m., and Sundays at 6 p.m. weekly. All are welcome.

The Digging Up Roots Ancestry Forum is meeting on Thursday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Participants are really enjoying themselves. The workshop is July 25. Participants are invited to bring a laptop or tablet, and paper and pen. This will be a free bimonthly workshop offered courtesy of Jo Ann Hall Osborne. For more information, call (606) 855-4463.

We have converted Friday Nite Pickin’ to a supper club environment where folks can come and enjoy music while eating their evening meal from the fabulous Black Sheep Menu. We will have a featured local singer/songwriter every Friday. Come support local live music and community building efforts. Music on Fridays from 7 to 9 p.m.

You have an open invitation to come and hang out with us at the Center when you can. We have Wi-Fi now so kids and adults are better satisfied not being cut off from their electronic devices. We also have a playground and a walking track so bring the whole family for a visit. Regardless of differences in education, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, race, or perceived differences, all are welcome and will be treated with justice and friendship. It’s a hate free zone and you are invited! Come and linger among friends!
