The Blackey Improvement Committee was established in 1964 and the Blackey Day 50th anniversary festival is pretty much on schedule.
Violet Watts has the musical lineup all on schedule and that is a big job to have that many bands with backto back music, but she does it well and she even has a surprise for us this year.
All the craft and food spaces are filled. I think we will have the best selection that we have ever had. The talent of what people can do just keeps getting better. We have 10 food booths and 26 craft booths.
The silent auction is always interesting. You never know what you will find. This year we hope to have some big ticket items for the silent auction, but you always know you will get a bargain. We want to thank everyone who donated to the Blackey Day Festival.
Blackey Missionary Baptist Church will have a big country breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. for $5. All proceeds go to the church.
We will not be having the horseshoe tournament due to space and safety reasons, but we will have the cornhole games with trophies starting at 2 p.m., Saturday.
Wanda Whitehead is having the photo contest with first, second and third place trophies. Photo drop off deadline is Oct. 10 by 5 p.m. at the Blackey Library.
We will have the inflatables, puppet show, face painting and all the entertainment is free. What else could be better than a Friday evening and all day Saturday of the best music in eastern Kentucky and it’s all free. So come join the fun. Bring your chair if you want. Seating is limited. Sit under the big tent or dance if you want to.
We have the senior citizens center/ community center set up for the hospitality room with free coffee and will have fireworks after the festival.
We have Blackey Day tshirts at Kat’s Barber Shop at Isom beside the Isom IGA. They are black with gold lettering with Blackey Days 50 Anniversary logo. They are the prettiest ones we’ve had in awhile. The sizes are small to LX, price $15. If anyone wants one mailed to you, call me at (606) 634-2530 and I will mail you one.
All the food and craft booths will be open Friday at 2 p.m. until 7 p.m. Music and dancing starts at 5 p.m., so come out Friday and have supper with us. Then starting Saturday, Oct. 11, at 9 a.m., all booths are to be open, food and craft, inflatables, back-to-back music and dancing all day. A cakewalk will take place Saturday from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. with a cupcake walk for the children which should be fun.
So the Blackey Improvement Festival Committee invites you to our 50-year festival, 1964 to 2014. That in itself is pretty special. We strive to make Blackey Day better every year. We don’t have a lot of space, but we have the very best talented people we can find and some amaze me with their talent.
The Blackey Garden Club does such a good job with their decorations. The Blackey Improvement Committee, the Blackey Garden Club and the community center do a lot of good things for our community.
We ask that all the craft and food booths we set up by noon on Friday, Oct. 10, and be open by 2 p.m. We will have paid security Friday, Oct. 10, and Saturday, Oct. 11, so your stuff will be safe.
So come visit us at the little place with the big blue bridge called Blackey in Letcher County. It really is one of the best festivals and the last one of the season.
So come sit under the tent and listen to the great music, dance, eat, talk to family and friends, make new friends. You will be in for a treat. Come join the fun. So come home to Blackey Day.
