Board member dies at 75




Funeral services were held Monday for Letcher County Board of Education member Attwell Turner.

Turner, of Kona, died after a sudden illness December 21 at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington. He was 75 years old.

He was a son of the late Cledis and Sarah Moore Turner, and the widower of Peggy Bentley Turner. He was a brother of the late Alen Turner, Ancil Turner, and Iwanna Moore.

Turner was a retired school teacher and bus driver in the Letcher County School System. Before retiring from the school system, he was active in unions and organizations sified employees.

Turner was admired by many for his willingness to be a voice for the school district’s employees. He never shied away from criticizing past and present school board members when he thought board policy went against the best interests of the district’s employees.

He is survived by three daughters, Belinda Turner, Indiana; Debra Lucas, Whitaker; and Dwanna Taylor, Kona; five brothers, Ervil Turner, Montgomery, Ala.; Vernal Turner and Denzil Turner, both of Garrett; Glenn Turner, Louisville; and Shiron Turner, Burlan Heights, Ohio; five sisters, Fonetta Boyd, Vermillion, Ohio; Jeanette Hoover, Wayne, Mich.; Violet Roe, Lake Zurich, Ill.; and Dana Collins, Drift; nine grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday at the Millstone Missionary Baptist Church. Burial was in the John Bentley Cemetery at Deane.

Letcher Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
