Board should drop appeal, ex-chairman advises in a letter

The following letter was sent to Robert Kiser, chairman of the Letcher County Board of Education, by Steven Carroll Sexton, who served as school board chairman in the 1990s.

To: Letcher County Board of Education

From: Steven Carroll Sexton

Date: July 5, 2013

Subject: Attorney General’s Opinion

Chairman Kiser:

Hardly ever do I publicly criticize a school board decision. I do applaud the good decisions, but I keep quiet about the decisions I consider to be questionable. This time I must say that the decision to appeal the recent Attorney General’s opinion is not a good one.

Even though the board has used the same statement for decades when entering into an executive session, that does not make it correct. It was probably okay unless someone objected. Will this court action benefit the students of our school system? If not, why are we taking this action? The consequences are readily apparent. The cost of this litigation, which could last for months or even years, will be a drain on finances during tight budget times.

Please consider this request to withdraw the unnecessary and untimely court action. Thank you for your consideration.

Respectfully,

STEVEN CARROLL SEXTON
