An eight-year-old Jenkins boy died Wednesday night from head and chest injuries he suffered in a tragic accident.
Police say the accident occurred when Trent Carty, a son of Keith and Megan Carty, lost control of his bicycle while riding down a hill on Williams Street in the Muddtown community of Jenkins. The mishap occurred around 8 p.m. on May 7, said Jenkins Police Chief Jim Stephens.
Trent was transported to the Whitesburg hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:11 p.m. by Letcher County Coroner Marty Baker.
“This is just one of those freak accidents,” said Stephens. “I just want to emphasize that this was an accident. This was a tragedy that no one could have stopped.”
Stephens said investigators are trying to determine the cause of the accident. The invetigation is being led by Jenkins Police Cpl. Josh Richardson.
