Breakfast to honor Martin Luther King

Letcher Countians will celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream of a colorless society at the annual MLK Day Breakfast on Monday.

The breakfast will be held from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Letcher County Central High School, and will include a meal, viewing of student projects on King, and recognition of past and present members of Foster Grandparents, Americorps and Americorps*VISTA. Americorps is the agency to which Congress has given the responsibility of promoting MLK Day. The Letcher County event is sponsored each year by the Cowan Community Center, with assistance from Americorps and VISTA members and other local organizations. Letcher County Central High School is also helping to sponsor the event.

The breakfast will be catered, and will be held in the school cafeteria. After eating, participants will move to the auditorium for a presentation about Dr. King by Cowan Elementary School students, for singing and remarks.

The event is open to the public, and the planning committee invites everyone to attend. All current and former Foster Grandparents, VISTA members and Americorps members are especially invited, and asked to wear their uniforms so they may be recognized by the group. Americorps, VISTA and Foster Grandparents should call Cowan Community Center at 633-3187 if they plan to attend.
