The Highland Winds and The University of Virginia’s College at Wise Jazz Ensemble will present the annual fall concert on Monday, Oct. 25, at 7:30 p.m. at Letcher County Central High School in Whitesburg.
The concert is free and open to the public.
The Highland Winds are under the direction of Richard Galyean. The Jazz Ensemble is under the direction of Donald Sorah.
The ensemble is made up of UVa-Wise students, local high school students and community members. The group rehearses once a week and performs two concerts each semester. Monday’s performance marks the first time the band has performed in Kentucky.
The concert will feature music from some of Broadway’s greatest composers. Featured will be Andrew Lloyd Webber, Richard Rodgers, Claude-Michel Schonberg, Frank Wildhorn and Leonard Bernstein. The concert will feature student conductor Elizabeth Good, a senior music performance major at UVa-Wise.
Prior to the performance, alumni and friends of UVa- Wise are invited to a reception at Dr. John Pellegrini’s business office at 255 Main Street in Whitesburg. The reception takes place from 5:30 until 7 p.m.
