Located just east of Jenkins stands a church that has become a legacy. Burdine Freewill Baptist Church has stood strong beside the elementary school for several years now. Every hour, neighbors will hear the church bells ring out and maybe notices a classic hymn to remind us of the good news Jesus brings!

On January 25, 1928, eight people began to call upon the Lord to execute their plans to establish this church. Somewhere for Christians to worship and the lost to be saved. Eighty years later, this vision is still alive! Members and visitors celebrated on January 27, Sunday’s service, while many voiced their memories and appreciation for Burdine’s founders. We lifted up Jesus’ name as Mark Wright led the congregation in singing “He Set Me Free” and “I Shall Not Be Moved.” We enjoyed wonderful singing and music from The Hughes Family just before Pastor Ralph Vicars delivered a message from II Peter 3 starting at verse 1.

Burdine Freewill Baptist Church loves the fellowship. Each month the ladies join together in their Auxiliary building to pray to Jesus and discuss ways to help our community and our missions worldwide. Our ladies quilt together. But most importantly, many are available on a 24-hour prayer line. Our men have a monthly Bible Study. These meetings are set aside from our regular 6:30 p.m. services on Wednesday evenings and our regular 11 a.m. Sunday morning services. Our Sunday School meetings begin at 10:00 a.m. with classes for all ages! Our children learn about Jesus in their own Junior Church meetings during Sunday’s service. Bible club is held each Wednesday. The kids sing and study scripture, as well as learning to pray.

Throughout 80 years, Burdine Freewill Baptist has had six different pastors. Brother Ralph Vicars serves now. Brother Bennie McCall was called last December to assist him. The church and its ministers are associated with the Letcher County John Thomas Association.

Burdine Freewill Baptist Church invites everyone to become a part of God’s great family. You are welcome to worship with us as you are for we know that our God looks not on our appearance but He searches over our hearts. Our mission is to see that Jesus is lifted up in our lives and community. We desire to see Christians revived as we lead the lost to Christ Jesus, our King!
