An old Letcher County native was told he had to be taxed because his government, like a father, protected him from his enemies, cared for him when he was sick, fed him when he was hungry and gave him an education. Now for these reasons we need money and we are going to tax you. The old man replied, ‘I understand it is like this. I have a dog and when my dog is hungry and he comes to me and begs for food so I say to him, ‘Dear faithful dog, I see you are hungry and I am very sorry for you. I shall give you meat.’ Then I take my knife and cut off his tail and give it to him. Then I say, ‘Here my faithful dog, be nourished by this nice piece of meat.’

.

This goes out to someone on Dry Fork. You live in the hollow above me. You need to learn to mind your own business. We’re not doing anything that you haven’t ever done, so leave us alone.

.

People that don’t know need to be aware that the DaVita patients are the kidney dialysis patients at the Whitesburg ARH hospital. They are on their third week of having to go to Pikeville to take dialysis because of the recent diesel spill. They are sick already and then have to travel an hour or an hour and a half and then have to sit and wait because the people in Pikeville already have dialysis patients and the Whitesburg people have to be worked in around them. Sometimes it is midnight before these people are getting home. You know this is unbearable on their health.

.

If you are working and you go in at nine o’clock and you sign in like you are there at eight and you know you are not, you are doing the wrong thing. How can you accept an award when you are not there that early? That is lying and cheating. So I would reconsider that if I were you.

.

I trouble with my cell phone service for a week. When I called AT&T, the AT&T people implied it was our two phones. However, I’ve learned from other people they were having trouble too. My friend went into the AT&T store in Pikeville and was told there were tower problems and they would be fixed by March 14. Why do the people who answer the phones at AT&T know less about service in eastern Kentucky than the local AT&T store?

.

I think the meth problem in Jackhorn and Neon needs to be investigated. It is starting to get aggravating dealing with these meth heads all of the time. l think we need a mayor of Neon who can make people clean up around their places, especially all of those unsanitary clothes hanging around the old A&P building. There are so many old trailers that are blown over and torn down right in the city limits. Boy, what a pretty little town.

.

This goes out to Letcher Circuit Judge Sam Wright, who was elected by the voters of the county to uphold the laws of the county and not try to make up new ones of his own to turn the pill heads back loose on the families and on the streets. His job is to enforce the law. If he turns these pill heads back out on their families, their own children will destroy their lives too. The voters of this county need to realize that his job and his responsibility are to enforce the laws of the state.

A sculpture has been placed in the triangle as you come into Whitesburg at the college. I would like to know what it is or represents — the meaning of it and why it was placed there. Who designed it? Some years ago a dogwood tree had been planted there. It was cut down because it obstructed the view of drivers pulling out into traffic. Now this sculpture obstructs the view.

.

To the woman at the club up on the mountain: On February 20 your eyes lit up like a kid on Christmas morning when you saw your lover walk in, but when his wife walked in right behind him you looked so sad. I guess she is doing better than you ever thought she would. And just so you know, she knows everything about it that I could possibly tell her, so look out.

.

Well, thank you for thinking about me, but actually I act like an angel 24/7. That’s what I am. You should be more concerned about what you have done because my sins have been washed away.

.

Good gracious. Now not only do we have to hear them sing at church every Sunday, we’ve got to see them on the Letcher County Government Channel as well.

.

I guess that we should all be ready to just beat up on referees if all we are ever going to get is probation. I guess we can just start going around the county and whooping up on everybody we see. If that is all you are going to get is probation it is not a big deal.

.

There is a newbie in jail for selling drugs. I just wanted everyone to know he is a child molester also. So you boys need to get him.

.

To my certain next-door neighbor: I read the little piece you put in Speak Your Piece about me sitting on my front porch. Well, guess what, pal. Everyone knows you have a prostitute living in your house. And you know what? Your mother is a prostitute, too. So guess what? The whole neighborhood knows what you are up to on Friday and Saturday to get away with it. You’ve got another thing coming. If you think the law is going to stick up for you, you have another thing coming. They are going to bust your butt at any time just like they busted your friend for trafficking in drugs from Florida.

.

After almost three decades of teaching I challenge any one of you who gripes about teachers to try it for one week or how about one week at each grade level. Teachers can’t do it all. If parents would do their job, the teachers’ job would be easier. After teaching kindergarten students, the ones parents worked with were so far ahead and stayed ahead. The others lagged behind through junior high

Education than sports. Work with your child at home.

.

I was reading in the paper about the assault on the referee. It looks like Billy Joe Smith got away scot free. He pleaded guilty and got six months in jail probated. What does that mean? Nothing? So we can go beat up referees if we want to? Well this county sucks.

.

I just thought all the people in Whitesburg and surrounding areas would like to know the water is not clean yet. They are hiding it, because all the dialysis patients were sent home a letter stating the water was still contaminated.

.

The little rat got caught stealing after 20 some years. What goes around comes around.

.

Hey Brenda Gross. We miss your writing in the paper. Please tell us what is going on in Eolia.

.

If you have ever been to Eolia, especially Franks Creek, you know it is a beautiful place to live. I challenge every person that lives on Franks Creek, let’s clean up our lawns. Some people will never see the inside of our houses. Some lawns are a real mess and need something done. Let’s get together and get something done before spring.

.

Do you know what a doctor, lawyer and a streetwalker all have in common? They all make money the easy way.

(Bet they each have clients and patients you would run from.)

.

Quit lying on your exhusband. Nobody believes you anyway. You are just lying to cover your own tracks.

.

You said the school board needs to cut back. That’s easy. The fat cat department is the athletic department. They have coaches, assistant coaches, advisers, and all kinds of other titles, and all these people have jobs for their wives. Also, the main office is overloaded, but you can’t do anything about the athletic department. That is the Superintendant’s bunch of pets.

.

To a certain young woman: You don’t really know this young man that’s your boyfriend. I don’t have anything against him, but I know him. I used to work with him too. I know of his family. If you think you’re all of it with him, you better think again. He tells them, I’m sure, something different — most likely just using you to get the material things he wants. I’m sure he wines and dines you, buttering you up, but when you’re not around he’s a different person. I’ll be surprised if he ever marries you. There’ve been girls before you, like you, and probably more after you. A little advice: watch him. He’s not what he seems.

I wrote this article because people at the local, state and federal government never detail in ‘layman’s terms’ how their tax money is being utilized. The usual information from those that are in charge is an outline of those who owe after the last election, especially in various states where ‘town meetings’ were held and politicians’ feet were held to the fire. Consider the politician in Wisconsin lost composure after getting back in the heat of the kitchen and called the protesters, according to the national news, ‘A bunch of slobs.’ What do you think about that remark? I think he needs to be voted out of the ‘kitchen.’ Transparency has never been considered at any level because the voting constituents are not asking questions prior to electing individuals that serve you and me. I observe at the local level that many are elected on personality, not considering issues that are important to the local, state, or federal government. The size of our government money that is spent and constituents’ input into how our money is spent is never an issue. Accountability is not part of our government at the present time. I disagree with the idea the public would not understand or even examine the accounting records; I am assuming that people who were ‘ in the know’ would be able to discuss with those who are uninformed about how their tax money is spent. I want to list some terminology for you to reminisce about as to why there is no transparency is government today: the Old Buddy System, cooking the books, limited audits at all levels, special interest groups, lack of constituent input, complacency in your job, double/triple dipping the system, too much status quo government, lack of visionaries, after the fact government, self interest, nepotism, no consensus from the public, lack of patriotism, break down of law and order, overburdened court system, scales of justice, voter apathy, greed exceeds need, ‘don’t blow my cover.’ During this time in our history with unemployment, people losing their jobs, foreclosure on their homes, no health care and indications the government will attempt to prosecute these that are in the above category if they cannot afford insurance, what kind of government would promote this idea, especially under a representative democracy? Other groups of people are in the same category as the unfortunate ones mentioned above. Some of us are blessed into a ‘comfort zone,’ good job, health benefits, and all the other amenities, but you can ask for a pay raise, tax increases, etc., and this places you in a ‘comfort zone.’ Some compassion is shown for the less fortunate, but this will not pay health care, buy the food, shelter or clothing that sustains life. God knows about the good, the bad, and the ugly that is happening in our world today. In closing I would like to direct attention to Mr. Taylor, who had some pertinent ideas relative to transparency in an article he expounded on recently.

.

In 1996, Luz Robles came to the U.S. from Mexico. In order to become a permanent resident, she had to swear allegiance to the United States. She graduated from a Utah university and became active in the state legislature in 2004. Her praises have been sung to the highest, and in 2008 she was elected to the state senate. But there is more to the story. Follow the date line. In 2005, Vincente Fox, then the president of Mexico, appointed her to a position in the Mexican government. How can you have allegiance to one country and yet serve two? She is also said to be active in immigration. To quote the late Paul Harvey, ‘Now you have the rest of the story.’

To whom it may concern: I have been listening to the news and what’s been going on around what used to be a God-fearing nation. I love our country and thank God there is still some God-fearing Christians. It’s plumb sickening and a pure abomination that our so-called leaders of our country are passing the most disgraceful laws that they are approving and passing. For instance: God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve. They need to get down on their knees and pray to God to save their souls. It’s pretty bad when our nation allows and upholds homosexuality and same-sex marriage. It’s sick. I love everybody; they’ve got a soul. God loves them and He saves their soul. I am a God-fearing blood-bought, born again child of God of 32 years. I’m a preacher. I preach nothing but the true word of God. I don’t bend, sugarcoat or change it in any way. The Word of God is like a two-edged sword. It cuts Jesus into the soul and cuts Satan out. Accept it for what it says and for what it means. Please read 2nd Chronicles, Chapter 7, verse 14: If my people, which are called by my name shall humble themselves and pray and turn from their wicked ways then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins, and will heal their land. This is what the United States needs to do. And until they do what the Bible says to do, the United States will continue on a downhill slide straight into hell where the worm dieth not and fire is not quenched. The book of Psalms 9:17: The wicked shall be turned into hell and all nations that forget God. Psalms 9:8: And he shall minister judgment to the people in all uprightness. If you will read the Bible and look at our nation, you can see it is in real bad shape. It is getting ready to collapse. To the people, President and our government, for God’s sake, wake up and turn back to God. He is coming real soon to get His church, and what’s left behind will really see hell. Hebrews 9:27: And as it is appointed unto men once to die but after this the judgment. So please when you read this. please read Hebrews 9:25: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as manner of some is, but exhorting one another, so much the more as you see the day approaching. With all respect and love in my heart, God bless you. Brother in Christ, Edward T. Wolfe Sr.

Sad But True: It all starts out just smoking weed, then harder drugs become something you need./Pills and coke are what I tried, because the weed no longer got me high./I do drugs so long my body needs dope, just every day life I cannot cope./Can’t get high at work so I don’t get a job./It takes money for my habit, so I lie, cheat and rob./I can’t remember what happened the day before./I’m dying fast and symptoms I ignore./It seems like every day is just the same./I stay so high I don’t even know my own name./Those who love me are the ones who really hurt./They’ll be here to suffer when they cover me with dirt./Some people change when they reach the end of their rope./But most people die before they quit doing dope.
