Sometimes all it takes is a bottle of wine to realize the person you fell in love with more than three years ago is still the person you want to spend the rest of your life with. Hopefully you feel the same way I do. Enjoy your Motorhead poster and I’ll see you soon.

.

When is the city of Jenkins going to refund the money from overcharging their utility customers? I need the money to pay my light bill. One of the councilmen has promised when campaigning and in the council meetings that he will never rest until the overcharges are refunded in full. I know they have got the money because the same councilman conducted his own audit of their financial records and found a $400,000 error. It’s my money and I need it now.

.

The drugs are still going on strong in Woodrock. They bought a new pickup.

.

I heard that MRSA staph infection is running rampant in Letcher County.

.

West Virginia has a proposal to put a tax on tobacco and pay medical bills for people with smoking related illnesses. What is wrong with this picture? In Kentucky they put on a tobacco tax and left a huge Medicaid deficient. Why not use the tobacco money to pay for Medicaid, which fits the bill for smoking related problems?

.

This is concerning the city of Whitesburg. We have no clothing stores for nice clothes or household items. We don’t have any new car dealerships. We don’t have a steakhouse. We don’t have a Cracker Barrel. We don’t have furniture stores. We don’t even have a drycleaner except send out and it costs more. We have to go to another county or state to get what we need. Why? I don’t know why we don’t have something around here. We should be one of the richest little counties around with coal and gas jobs. We have the worst of everything here. We have the smallest Food City and the smallest Walmart. If you live in Letcher County, you have to drive to another county or state to buy something. Wake up, people. Everybody needs to be selling and moving out.

.

To Walmart line: I know you love me. I know the look of love. I am sorry to run from you for so long, but I thought I might complicate your life. I’m not running from you any longer. I can’t stand to see you cry. Call or I’ll see you at Walmart about 12 on Saturday.

.

Why doesn’t the county ush the water lines coming out to Whitco, Cowan, UZ, and different places? I don’t understand this. As of Sunday, there was some deep oil in Whitesburg that turned the water brown. I know this is a fact.

.

It’s funny. You have a Jenkins teacher who has to home school his own kid because the school is not good enough for him, but yet he coaches the peewee basketball team and brings him to school to play on the ball team. Something is weird about that.

.

I’d like to volunteer to wear a wire for UNITE and go around to these dope dealers, buy pills and then turn them in.

.

I would just like to thank Linda, Roseanna and Jamie for bringing me food and medicine while I was so sick that I couldn’t hold my head up. Thank you very much. You all were my angels that day.

.

To turned in the drunk cop: You are a wonderful person. We are all talking about what a good person you are. Hang in there and keep up the good work.

.

I was reading Speak Your Piece and saw a comment about kids starving while people are on welfare and buying drugs. People think it is a smart thing to drug test these parents, but isn’t the object of the game — and I am not defending the parents of these children that are starving — to lessen the deficit. Instead of wasting taxpayers’ money, why don’t you pick up a phone and call social services? That way the kids will be put in a different home and the federal deficit will go down without having to do drug testing. Drug testing costs money.

.

Oh, I think it is wonderful. George W. Bush was in Kentucky signing autographs for his book titled ‘How I Spent Bill Clinton’s Excess Money and How I Screwed The Nation.’ I think I’ll get me a copy.

.

The most comprehensive website I have found that has any kind of news you are looking for is called www.beforeitsnews.com. Also, check out www.newsoftheweird.com. It has hilarious things that are true. Of course you can’t make this stuff up.

.

One of the things I don’t like about singing at church is when they say ‘help us out with this song’ and no one helps them out. I also don’t like when a guy talks all the way through a song. Our house band does that every week. I just wish they would sit down and quit.

.

Dear Speak Your Piece: Good answer to the person talking about Wayne Fleming, G.C. Kincer and them dreaming big. That was a good answer. Thank you for being Speak Your Piece.

.

To the guy who was driving from Millstone toward Kona at about 7:05 a.m. on Feb. 17: If you had hit the man in the red Chevrolet truck, I would have gotten out and stomped your behind if he wouldn’t or couldn’t. And you better be thankful we had the little baby with us. If we hadn’t been taking him to school, we would have followed you back and I would have had him bust your behind or I would have done it myself. Buddy, you better watch how you drive from here on out. And if I ever see anything else out of you again or if you are driving the wrong way, I will call the state police on you right then and there. So you better remember your tail is stomped if you ever pull a trick like that again.

.

To our neighbors who have three cars parked in a driveway: My medicine comes by UPS and the driver could not get past your cars to deliver to me. We have to drive off the side of the road to get past your cars. Please consider your neighbors in the head of the hollow and move your cars closer to your house.

.

I bet those folks in Wisconsin are regretting voting Republican now. What’s really sad is they actually told them they intended to balance the budget on the backs of the working people and they still won the election. The Founding Fathers were liberals — they wanted to change things. Jesus was a liberal. Conservatives wanted to ‘conserve’ the right to own slaves. Liberals wanted to abolish the right to own slaves. If you are female and like that you have the right to vote, thank the liberals. If you benefit from Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, family leave, union membership, etc., please thank the liberals. For you folks that vote Republican because of the abortion issue, remember the deciding vote on Roe vs. Wade was from a Supreme Court justice appointed by President Reagan. While holding the presidency, the House majority, and the Senate majority, the Republicans did not reverse the laws on abortion. You see, they win too many elections on that issue to actually try to reverse it. Thank You.

.

I was wanting to make a comment about Ross Kegan. He made a comment about Black Mountain Resources over here and the only thing he was trying to say was what the truth was. I’ve always faced the truth. If anybody knows what is going on at Black Mountain Resources, it is Ross Kegan and all that management over there. I know them. They do a great job under pressure. This is a huge outfit over here. I don’t think people know that, and 70,000 to 75,000 raw tons of coal a day is a normal production day over here. You can count the companies on one hand that run that kind of production in one area. They are good people. Good management is the reason you have a good company. There is a guy up here that lives in a 100-year-old house where they are going to development. They are going to have to move the house. They have already created an area for a house and are going to build him a new house and give him the keys. That isn’t usually mentioned, but that is what they are doing. I know when it comes to graveyards and stuff around here, you call them and they’ll send equipment and whatever it takes to fix it. I know that is a fact. I’m pro Black Mountain and I am pro Ross Kegan and all that upper management. I just want to compliment them for doing a good job. It shows. They are spending about $20 million updating this plant and putting in a new load-out system that is just top of the line. I can see money being spent. They are here for the long haul and that’s good. I like that.

.

I am calling about the comment in praise of UK’s Extension office: I don’t know what county these people are from, but I know in Letcher County we can’t even get our agent to answer our phone calls. He doesn’t return any phone calls. He won’t talk to anyone. I took some vegetables down there two years ago that I was very proud of and he didn’t even acknowledge they were there. I don’t know what county agent they are talking about, but it sure must not be Letcher County.

.

I heard a preacher on the radio preaching about drugs, so I sat and I listened. After he was finished I thought to myself, how could he be preaching that sermon when everything he talked about is going on with his own family? In my own opinion — and my opinion may not be much — you should take care of your own before you try to preach out to others. You need to take care of your own household first instead of trying to take care of everyone else’s household in Letcher County.

.

I watch the ‘Antique Road Show.’ It’s a good thing. I love it. Us old hillbillies are never going to go to the ‘Antique Road Show’ because they will never come close enough and they charge you $100 per item to appraise it for you. I wish there was somebody in our community who really knew about antiques who would go from house to house and give us old hillbillies appraisals on our antiques. If someone really knew their antiques and would be honest with us, I would gladly pay them $50 to go through my stuff and appraise it. If I found out you didn’t know what you were talking about, I would put a knot on your head. Up in these hollows and hills there are a lot of antiques and we don’t even know what we have. If you are out there, you could start a good business. Think about it. Advertise. I hope you are out there and I believe you are.

.

Whoa. You have gained a whole lot of weight.

.

I wish the women who like to gossip on the telephones would take the telephones and stick them where the sun doesn’t shine.

.

I’m watching John Hagee on television. He says the Bible says God will not share His glory with anybody, which I know that to be the truth. Does this mean Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny, too? Does anyone have a good answer for me?

.

Health is a big issue here, maybe ‘the’ issue. There are lots of data and statistics from lots of agencies, including the Centers for Disease Control, showing that the 5th Congressional District is the unhealthiest of the country’s 435 districts. You don’t have to depend on statistics, though; just look around. People here don’t look their ages — they look older than they are, sometimes by decades. They start an accelerated aging in their twenties and look old in their forties and fifties. The effects of pollution aren’t confined to the respiratory system; they also affect the skin. Polluted water doesn’t just affect anyone internally. It also affects the skin and hair. Some of the most alarming data is on the reduced longevity. The most surprising thing about this situation is that it is so readily accepted by the populace, although it will certainly exact a toll on them and their descendants for generations. Anyone who has ever driven through one of the eastern Kentucky towns during a windstorm has seen the dirty, yellow air that coats street signs when it rains. Now there is a drive to eliminate oversight and detection of the many dangers. As an excellent editorial asked recently, which is the greater enemy, cancer or the EPA? The existing mentality is worrisome. A lot is given away for so little in return. It certainly makes for an easy way for the polluters.

.

If you have a medical card, you get Cadillac medical service. If you are a poor worker, you get as much medical care as you can afford on Republican wages. Many of us have health insurance but the co-pays are so high we can’t afford to go to the doctor. Republicans have had 16 years in Congress to provide an answer. The present system puts many working people in bankruptcy court over medical bills.

.

The Mountain Eagle: IT SCREAMS! That’s laughable. It doesn’t even chirp. Whitesburg’s recent, reoccurring and continuing water contamination wasn’t even front page news. Isn’t The Eagle (from here on out referred to as ‘The Chicken’) located in the City of Whitesburg? Yes, it is. But no, apparently this story isn’t worthy of front page coverage in The Chicken. After all, there was a basketball tournament. Now, I don’t expect to see this in Speak Your Piece, but I would love to know what the editorial comment from that privileged child of a late great newsman would be. We sure could use Tom Gish right now.

.

To the person on The Eagle’s case because they don’t do investigation of corruption and voter fraud: You are dead on, but The Eagle just threw it back at you. They don’t need an open and shut case in order to investigate. If you have that you don’t need to investigate. There is plenty enough so that a few questions in the right places would lead to more. A lot of us remember when The Eagle would turn the place upside down for a lot less than this.

.

Wiley should be aware of the concept of double entendre. ‘Wonking,’ the title of his Saturday program, is a bad word according to the Urban Dictionary. Call Wiley at 633-1208 and tell him he should look up the meaning of words before he uses them on the radio and some young buck at the FFC busts him.

.

To a nurse at the Whitesburg hospital: You are a better actress than the people in Hollywood.

.

We Jasmine Nicole Guthrie a happy third birthday Feb. 27. We love you, Jaz. From Mommy, Daddy and Bubby, Mamaw and Papaw, Auntie and Uncle.

.

Most do not recognize a hidden problem for mountain students. The hardest thing in the world, according to linguists, is to learn two dialects of the same language. When two dialects share a common vocabulary, it is difficult to deal with distinctions in meaning and punctuation. The dialect of home use does not readily carry over to academic English. The most glaring example of a language discrepancy is the language used by teenagers when texting.

.

I think it’s pathetic the way the women are treated at Letcher County Jail. The men get work release and get credit two days for one. Women are not even offered this option. Women have to pull every day of their sentence. In the past, women had the option of work release, but because one girl messed up now all women inmates have to suffer for her mistake. I could not count how many men have run or had drugs passed to them on work release. They still get the privilege of work release. The only person who suffered from that incident was the individual involved. So why do all the women inmates have to suffer because of one individual? Another issue women have in the Letcher County Jail is being a trustee. The male inmates have the privilege of getting to be a trustee while the women inmates are always confined to one room. They only get to move during visits and medication time. They are put in a room with four white walls and forgotten about. Letcher County Jail is a men’s jail. Don Mc- Call should try to make arrangements to give the women inmates the same opportunities as the men inmates. Women should be treated with the same equal rights as the men. Thank you for listening. A concerned citizen.

.

If Letcher County was information in Speak Your Piece that I and many other readers read I am sure it would sound like a terrible place. But as Paul Harvey always said, and now for the rest of the story: I was born and raised in Letcher County, as have been other members of my family. We all received a good education and have worked hard to be productive members of society. My brother served in the Air Force, and as a quality control inspector at Carswell Air Force Base in Fort Worth. He retired from the Reserves as Sergeant Major. I have a grandson who is assistant basketball coach at Kansas State University. We all could brag on and on about our families. I am equally proud of each family member and I hope they know it. I just hate for readers to only hear bad news and think that is all there is to Letcher County. Letcher County has many good churches filled to overflowing each week. Angel Food programs distribute food to the needy. Come on good people, don’t let the bad overcome the good news I know is out there. gmaferrell@yahoo.com
