Calls for understanding

To the Editor:

Recently, rumors of discrimination have surfaced in our community. It really concerns me that anyone could be prejudiced against persons with intellectual disabilities. Having an intellectually disabled person or persons living in the neighborhood will not cause your property values to go down. Communities need to be educated on intellectual disabilities and know what is and what isn’t.

I will never fully understand how some people or groups are made to feel at the hands of discrimination. All discrimination is bad. It is really sad when a few are able to convince others to band together with them to discriminate. I thought our community was defined by diversity, with different cultures and experiences all working together. We all can make a real change by simply not tolerating discrimination of any kind.
