Car stolen from Lawrence County is found here; suspects able to get away

Whitesburg Police recovered a vehicle stolen from Lawrence County after a pursuit Sunday night.

Police Chief Tyrone Fields said an officer was patrolling when he attempted to stop a black Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck with no license plate. He said the driver refused to stop, and fled up KY 931 North toward Sandlick. Fields said the truck turned up a side road and the officer was unable to follow in his car and he called for assistance.

The officer said the truck appeared to have been driven by a male, and a female was in the passenger seat. When the truck reached trees that had fallen in the road, the driver parked and the two ran.

“By the time I got up there, they were long gone,” Fields said.

He said there were a lot of items in the back of the truck that police suspect were stolen, including jewelry. Fields said the truck was stolen May 24 in Louisa, about 100 miles from Whitesburg.

Fields said he suspects the person who stole the truck in Louisa is either from Letcher County, or has ties here, and stole the truck to get home.
