In the late 1930’s, Carcassonne Community School hosted back-to-back Letcher County Fairs. This year the community will host the greatest Fourth of July celebration in recent memory.
Activities and sign-ups begin at 3 p.m., with horseshoe and cornhole tournaments beginning at 4 p.m. The event will include concessions, souvenirs, and raffle tickets for sale, and free watermelon as long as it lasts. Ice cream, chips, candy, and soft drinks will be for sale starting at 3 p.m., and hamburgers and hot dogs starting at 6 p.m. Attendees can bring their own food and use the picnic tables.
Face painting and temporary tattoos will be available for kids, and there will also be a dunk tank. Local school bus drivers, private volunteers, and several Letcher County candidates will challenge visitors to give them a refreshing dip at three softball throws for a dollar.
There will be a special prize for the oldest veteran in attendance, and fireworks at hard dark.
