Carl Gallion dies; was WWII veteran

Funeral services for World War II veteran Carl Eugene Gallion Sr., 94, of Jenkins, will be held at 11 a.m. today (June 6) at the Jenkins Christian Church. Burial will follow at the Powell Valley Memorial Gardens in Big Stone Gap, Virginia.

A son of the late Jim Gallion and Mattie Mullins Gallion, he died June 2 in Whitesburg. He was the widower of Lucille Blizzard Gallion, a grandfather of the late Micah Shannon Gallion, and a great-grandfather of the late Keenon Ray Gallion. He was also preceded in death by seven brothers and three sisters.

Mr. Gallion was a World War II veteran, having been wounded in the Battle of Anzio during the Allied invasion of Italy in 1944. He was a member of the Jenkins Christian Church for over 55 years, a lifetime member of the DAV, the Pound VFW, and a member of the Jenkins Masonic Lodge for over 40 years.

Surviving are three sons, Danny Gallion and wife Margo, Carl Gallion Jr. and wife Cassie, and Shannon Gallion and wife Judy; a daughter, Carla Branham and husband Jack; eight grandchildren, 20 greatgrandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

Carty Funeral Home of Jenkins had charge of the arrangements.
