Caudill family reunion

The Martha and Silas Caudill Reunion was held at Lake Cumberland State Resort Park June 28-30 with 60 plus family members attending from eight states.

Jim and Linda Whitaker, Ida Sellers, and Kim Haas, the reunion hosts, had everything ready by Friday for a weekend of fellowship, food, fun and games.

Friday evening, family members gathered in the lodge dining room for dinner, then met in the activity center for an auction for children only. Refreshments and a birthday/anniversary cake were served while the very talented Jim Whitaker, David Stanley Caudill, and Leon Caudill entertained the crowd playing music and singing with the help of other members of the family. For a grand finale the boys serenaded Lee and Rudell singing requested songs, sang “Happy Anniversary” to Mary and Gene Shepherd who were celebrating 66 years of wedded bliss, and sang “Happy Birthday” to Shirley June Whitaker, and Lisa Reusch, who both had birthdays.

As everyone started leaving the center plans were made for Saturday. Some early risers met for golf games, walks, and shopping while others met in the dining room and lobby to just enjoy being together.

At noon, Jim and Linda invited all the attendees to their cabin for a delicious lunch prepared by Jim Whitaker and family. Jim’s stack cake disappeared quickly with Patricia Pigman finishing the last crumb. Jim’s hand-carved watermelon basket filled with a variety of fruit was the perfect table decoration.

After lunch some retired to their rooms for a nap while others went out on a boat, took a trip to the cliff, swam, played putt-putt golf, and spent time in the lobby exchanging stories.

Dinner time found a group in the dining room again followed by another gathering in the Activity Center for the adult auction where many crafts and treasures were on display and very soon auctioned off by Jim and Leon, the family auctioneers. The most sought after item was Mary Shepherd’s bowl and pitcher she made in the ‘70s. David Caudill got the prize and was the happiest buyer ever.

Lee Cornett could not be there since he is at his home in Cooper Landing, Alaska, but he called to check in and wished all the family a happy, safe weekend.

Special recognition and flowers were given to Mary and Gene Shepherd, the couple married the longest at 66 years; Meagan and Eric Reed, the newlyweds, married one year; Lee and Rudell, most family members present; Mariah and Lorelie O’Jala, traveling the farthest.

Sunday morning goodbyes were said as plans were made for the 2014 reunion which will be held at Blue Lick State Park. Ida Sellers assured everyone she will be back on her computer keeping all parties updated.

Jim Whitaker and Leon Caudill took their families on an extended vacation as they took off on a houseboat. All others made it home safely with good memories.
