I’m sure our family started a new tradition on Memorial Day this year. We had our oldest sister, Charlene Tacket Mason, an “unsurprise” birthday party. Her birthday is Thursday, June 3, and although none of us except her thought that far ahead, she announced at our cookout Monday evening that she was disappointed that we hadn’t mentioned her birthday and how she thought for sure that’s what our cookout was supposed to be, her surprise birthday party. So, the rest of the get-together every time we got the opportunity, we would all say, “Surprise!”
I even went inside and found a gift bag and put a few odds and ends in it and had her son, Blake Mason, presented it to her while we sang “Happy Birthday” to her. So, if you all see her out and about on Thursday, be sure and wish her an unsurprise birthday.
I just saw on Facebook this evening from my friend Vickie Wampler’s post that the Lady Cougars won the Softball District Championship. Her daughter, Autumn Wampler, is on the team. Congratulations, Lady Cougars.
Lots of the pictures I saw were taken by Ernie Sexton. He is a wonderful photographer. He also took a lot of pictures from the Letcher County Central graduation and has the group one for sell. You can get in touch with him at EastKy Photography on Facebook.
Once again the Letcher County Farmers’ Market will take place at the public parking lot in Whitesburg. It will open this year on Saturday, June 5, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. You can find the freshest fruits and vegetables from our local farmers. I’ve seen a few pictures of the gardens on Facebook and I plan on getting in on some of the rhubarb I saw posted from James and Lita Melton’s garden. They are two of the sweetest people you could ever meet.
God’s Love From a Diaper Bag will once again be having a drive-through diaper giveaway at the Letcher County Health Department parking lot on June 16 beginning at 1 p.m. and ending at 3 p.m. All rules will still apply and for those who receive diapers there will be special gifts for your children. Remember your baby has to have already been born to receive the diapers.
There will be an event going on at Fishpond Lake this Saturday, June 5, beginning at 9 a.m. It is “Kids Fishing Day”.
Food will be provided for every child and fishing gift bags will be provided to the first 50 kids that arrive. Limited poles will also be provided to share if they do not have a pole of their own.
It doesn’t cost anything to attend and you do not need a fishing license to participate. Each child will need to be accompanied by at least one adult.
This would not be possible without the donations and help from Letcher County Judge/Executive’s Office, the Department of Fish and Wildlife for the gift bags, and CANE Kitchen for the meals.
Our community still needs to be in prayer for our good friends, Robby and Denise Baker, and their son Caleb. Monday they were still expecting him to have to have another surgery and they are hoping he will then be able to be transferred to Cardinal Hill for rehab. Also, Cambridge Combs and her family need our prayers as they face the results of the tumor biopsy. Those of us that are healthy and have healthy kids have no idea what these parents are facing. Let’s just pray that God gives them the strength they will need in the days ahead.
We also need to be in prayer for James “Bones” Sturgill. He has COVID-19 and is the hospital. His daughter Jennifer Sturgill Sexton said he is still very sick but was able to eat a little Monday morning.
A few birthdays to mention are Jerry Cook, Debbie Day Blair, and Robert Gross on the 25th. Christie Adams had a birthday on the 27th along with my sisterin law, Jenny Lynn Yonts. On the 28th Tara Boggs, Kathy Baker Wynn, and Drew Eden Hampton had birthdays. Lisa Stansberry had a birthday on the 29th. Rickie Herrell Hopkins and Rick Blair had birthdays on the 30th Ginni Cook, Wanda Hatton, Jonathan Banks, Candy Mullins Caudill and Sandy Mullins Napier all had birthdays on the 31st. Shelly Parrott Sturgill had a birthday on the 1st. My sister Charlene Tacket Mason will celebrate on the 3rd and Samantha Oaks Rice will have a birthday on the 4th. Al and Lynn Bates will celebrate their wedding anniversary on the 4th.
Please continue to pray for Billy and Connie Adams and the rest of Keith’s family. Also, remember all those that have lost loved ones especially my pastor, Bill Jones, and his family.
I’m so happy to see so many people getting back in church since COVID restrictions are lightening up a little. I look at it like this, you know the difference between watching a concert on TV and actually attending it, well, that’s the same thing as being in the church service or watching it on Facebook.
