The Old Indian Bottom Regular Baptist Church at the Frog Pond at Blackey, was established in spring of 1810, being the oldest Regular Baptist Church in eastern Kentucky.
It was established from an arm of Roaring Springs Primitive Baptist Church, in Roaring Springs, N.C.
The present building was built around 1900 and is still in fairly good condition with the first big pot-bellied stove in the center of the building, and we still heat the old building with it.
We have had two weddings this year, and the first Tuesday of each month we have a singing, sometimes a preaching, and always a potluck supper.
The first Tuesday in December, the 7th, we will be having our annual Christmas program with Ron Short and friends. Our first Christmas program at the old church was in 1997, and we had not been able to put electricity in the old building. We had a big fire going in the old stove and the lanterns were lit. Ron Short started singing ‘Christmas Time’s A’Coming’ and it started to snow.
It was such a special time. It really put us in the Christmas spirit. Since then we have electricity, but we still heat with that old stove.
So I am sending everyone a special invitation to our annual Christmas on the Hill at the Old Indian Bottom Regular Baptist Church building at Frog Pond in Blackey, Tuesday, Dec. 7, at 6:30 p.m.
We are also having a potluck supper, so bring a covered dish. Come join us for an evening of old-time singing, storytelling, food and fun, entertainment by Ron Short and friends. Hope to see you there.
