A Letcher Circuit Court jury has convicted a Camp Branch man of first-degree sex abuse and is recommending that he serve six years in prison.
The jury determined that Carl David Adams, 39, of 124 Cookville Road, was guilty of sexually abusing a female juvenile under the age of 12 in 2013.
Floyd County Circuit Judge Johnny Ray Harris served as the special judge during the two- day trial held last week in Letcher Circuit Court.
“This type of case is particularly difficult to prosecute because too often the victim is afraid to come forward, be it an adult or a child,” said Letcher Commonwealth’s Attorney Edison G. Banks II. “Imagine just how difficult it is to tell a total group of strangers that you have been sexually assaulted or abused. Imagine how much more difficult that is for a child less than 12 years of age to do.”
This is the third case in recent months in which Letcher jurors have found an adult accused of sexual abusing a child guilty as charged.
“ This should send a strong message to those accused of such crimes, as well as encourage other victims to come forward as these children have done,” said Banks.
Adams will be formally sentenced December 15.
