City may save recycling center

The City of Whitesburg may save the Letcher County Recycling Center.

The Letcher Fiscal Court will meet in special session at 10 a.m. Monday for “consideration of leasing the recycling center to the City of Whitesburg,” County Judge/Executive Jim Ward announced Friday afternoon.

The meeting will be held in the basement of the courthouse annex building (old Letcher County Health Department).

The fiscal court closed the recycling center recently and laid off four employees, citing operational losses of about $200,000.

Depending on what action the fiscal court takes Monday, the Whitesburg City Council is expected to address the matter at its regular January meeting Tuesday night.
