Whitesburg police are warning residents and shoppers of a scam involving a man going to residential areas and grocery stores asking for baby formula or money to buy baby formula for his starving child.
Whitesburg Police Chief Tyrone Fields said the man doesn’t have a young child and is returning baby formula for gift cards.
Whitesburg Police received complaints of the man going door to door Sunday in Westwood. People have also fallen victim to this scam at Food City and Walmart. He has also been seen in the Cowan area.
“People are feeling sorry for him,” said Fields. “He is deceiving people and taking advantage of people.”
Fields said resources are available for people in need.
“People have the opportunity to come to city hall and we can point them to the right places to get help,” said Fields.
Police ask people to contact police if approached by someone asking for money or baby formula.
