I’d like to say sorry for my absence the last couple of weeks. With the snow and power outages, Christmas preparation, several Christmas celebrations, and then all the clean-up, I just didn’t find the time to sit down and write.
How did everyone fare with the snow and power outages? We had about eight inches of snow here on Blair Branch. I guess we were lucky compared to a lot of other Letcher County residents. Our electricity was only out for two and a half days. Michael, the boys, and I stayed with Mom and Dad. They have a coal stove, and that kept us toasty. Being the total klutz that I am, I sprained my ankle in the snow and I am still recovering. Thankfully I didn’t break anything, but I am still hobbling around.
I hope everyone had a very merry Christmas and that Santa brought everything you asked for. We celebrated with both my family and Michael’s. There were 29 of us at Mom’s on Christmas Eve. We were crammed in like sardines, but we had a nice time.
It has been a sad few weeks here on Blair Branch. We lost two of our friends and neighbors.
Evolena Back Adams died December 17. She was 75 years old. Evolena was the daughter of the late Green and Celia Blair Back. Surviving are her husband, Robert “Bob” E. Adams; a son, Kirk Adams of Jeremiah; and a brother, Steve Back of London, Kentucky.
Darold Keith “Darrell” Adams died December 20. He was 45 years old. Darrell was the son of the late Norman Eugene and Geneva Adams. Surviving are two brothers, Dennis Adams of Blackey and Doug Adams of Jeremiah.
Please continue to keep their families in your thoughts and prayers.
My grandma, Lucy Blair, fell and hurt herself pretty badly on December 30. We are all very thankful that she doesn’t have any broken bones, but she is really sore and having a hard time moving about. Charles E. hurt his back trying to help her when she fell. I hope they both are doing better real soon.
Gloria Price also fell and spent a few days in the hospital. She is now in the nursing home doing some rehabilitation. Juanita Hensley said they are trying to build Gloria’s strength up enough to be able to do a hip replacement.
I spoke with Jamie Halcomb Collins. She says that Wilma Halcomb is doing well, but that Jake is dehydrated and had to go for an IV.
Edna Blair Helton said she hasn’t been feeling too well. She is having some problems with her blood pressure and her heart skipping. She is suppose to see a specialist. I hope you feel better real soon, Edna.
I ran into Tim and Oakie Blair at Walmart before Christmas and Tim was telling me that their mom, Mary, was in the hospital with congestive heart failure and bronchitis. I haven’t heard recently how she is doing. I hope she is home and recovering now.
Virgil Combs is in ICU at Whitesburg ARH. Keep him in your prayers. His and Freda’s youngest daughter Sarah and her husband welcomed their baby girl into the world on December 21. She was 6 pounds, 12 ounces, 21.5 inches. They named her Mary Isabella Porter. Congratulations to them.
Helen Engle was in hospital on Christmas Eve, but was able to come home on Christmas Day and spend it with her family, her mom, Henrietta Caudill as well as her brothers and sisters.
My sister, Opal Jent, mentioned to me that Cindy Jane Mullins is in the hospital and hasn’t been doing too well. I sure hate to hear that. I think the world of her and her family. I hope she recovers quickly.
I sure hated to hear that Bessie Sexton died on December 27. Bessie was the daughter of the late Hasdore and Elizabeth Sexton. Surviving are two sisters, Esma Gibson of Colson and Ruth Southwood of Jackson. Letcher Manor will never be the same. I loved Bessie so much. She was always one of my favorite residents when I was working there.
I would like to wish belated happy birthdays to Lena Faye Whitaker who celebrated her birthday on December 14; Gloria Price, 23rd; Callie Horn and Holly Brown, 25th; Robert “Rob” Adams, 28th; Colton Whitaker, 29th; Wade Whitaker, 30th; Jr. Helton, January 2.
Karli Blair will celebrate her birthday on January 8. I hope your day is filled with love and laughter.
Happy New Year all! I hope 2010 is a great year for each and every one of you!
If I have left anyone or anything out, just let me know and I will get you next week. I hope everyone has a healthy and happy week. If you would like to contact me, you may do so at firstname.lastname@example.org.
