Coalition election planned for Jan. 12

The Letcher County substance abuse prevention coalition, United for Substance Abuse Prevention (USAP), will hold elections at its Jan. 12 meeting. The meeting will take place at 5 p.m. in the basement of the Harry M. Caudill Memorial Library in Whitesburg. Terms of office will be for two years.

USAP is Letcher County’s coalition for both UNITE and the Kentucky Agency for Substance Abuse Policy. In the summer of 2008, the boards of both groups voted to combine their resources and efforts into one coalition. The slate offered at January’s meeting will reflect leadership from both previous groups. Nominations from the floor can also be made at the meeting. USAP is supported by two funding streams: UNITE community coalition monies that are granted directly to the coalition and Kentucky ASAP funds, state funds that are part of the tobacco settlement and administered through county government.

With combined resources, the United for Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition has provided funding for the presentation of the one-man play “Dirt” at each of the high schools, free Film Nights at the libraries throughout the county, and smoking cessation materials for the health department. Funding support also includes incentives for successful drug court participants, Kids Day events, and drug testing materials for local agencies. In addition, USAP has continued support for ‘Hooked on Fishing’, family night events and the distribution of information to assist parents and community in creating a drug-free community for our children, youth and families. The group encourages the public to join in these efforts.
