Coalition seeks severance tax funds returned to coal-producing counties

The Kentucky Coal County Coalition has issued a resolution asking the Kentucky General Assembly to return more coal severance tax funds to coal-producing counties.

The resolution, which was signed by Letcher County Judge/Executive Jim Ward as chairman of the coalition, says the loss of revenue from the coal severance tax, which has fallen from $310 million in 2011-2012 to an estimated $210 million in 2013-2014, is causing serious financial problems in the coal counties. It also cites of number of coal miners who are unemployed in Kentucky, and says the economic down turn in the coal fields has reached a crisis level.
