Hello all! I hope this finds each of you doing well. Michael, the boys, and I are doing wonderful. Thank goodness! I know a lot of people have been sick with colds, flu, and stomach flu lately. We’ve sure been blessed to have it miss us. We do our best to wash our hands a lot and avoid being around anyone who may be sick as we can’t take chances on packing it back in on Mom, Sylvania Whitaker. She is doing really well, by the way.
Are y’all liking all this winter weather? I’m rather enjoying it. I’ll take the cold over the heat any day. My Twist and Shout hydrangeas aren’t liking it though. They were in full bloom — all different shades of pink and purple — until the first real cold night. When I went outside that next morning they were all brown and wilted. I hated to see them die, but I’ll get to enjoy them again come spring. I’d say my wallet won’t like it either when I see my electric bill after having to turn the heat on.
Ike, I got quite a laugh at your column about collecting apples a few weeks ago. I can just picture the look on your face when you and your pap got caught in the act of disobeying by your mom. Hilarious!
I was able to attend church services at Dixon Memorial Old Regular Baptist on Saturday night. I thought they had a nice service. Everyone is invited to attend on the fourth Saturday evening at 6:30 p.m. and the fourth Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m.
Wilma Halcomb was recently in ICU at Pikeville Hospital due to a large blood clot. She had surgery, is doing better, and is now back at Letcher Manor. Many thanks to all who prayed for her.
Daddy, Allen Whitaker, visited with her on Sunday. I believe Opal Jent said she even came out for church services held by Dixon Memorial at the nursing home. Mary Helen Blair also attended.
My nephew, Austin Wade Whitaker, son of Wade and Lena Whitaker, killed a nice 4-point buck during youth season on Oct. 12. They’ve made several delicious batches of deer jerky.
Zachary Arlin Jent, son of Allen and Jessica Jent, celebrated his first birthday with cake and ice cream on Oct. 12. He has two older siblings. Hayden and Alissa.
Speaking of Jessica, she has been in the hospital recently, after a rough round of the stomach flu, but is home and feeling better now.
Mom was telling me that my late Aunt Lola Crawford would have celebrated her birthday on Oct. 21. I had forgotten her birthday. She was always the sweetest woman and we all miss her dearly.
Lovell Blair and Clifford Blair celebrated their birthday on Oct. 11; Jocelyn Watts and Zachary Arlin Jent, Oct. 12; Dewayne Blair, Oct. 13; James Blair, Georgia Brown Ogle, and Roger Whitaker, Oct. 15; Justin Collins, Oct. 16; James Curtis Smith, Oct. 18; Madalyn Alexys Albers, Oct. 20; Lee Emmons, Oct. 21; Amanda Blair, Oct. 24; Colton Adams, Kyle Whitaker, and Chris Ingrams, Oct. 26; Tyra Maggard and April Whitaker, Oct. 28; Jonathon Blair, Oct. 29. Alex Blake Whitaker will celebrate Oct. 31.
Happy birthday to each of you. I hope your special day is all you could ever wish for and more!
The next West Letcher Oral History Society meeting will be on Nov. 4 at the Blackey Public Library at 6 p.m. Please come out and join us. I promise you won’t regret it. Even if you don’t have anything to share, you are more than welcome to just come out and listen. You never know what topic will come up.
Anyone excited about Halloween? Bailey and Dalton are ecstatic. They have been working on their costumes for a month. At first they wanted to go out and buy costumes, but I reminded them of how much fun we have had in the past making our own. So we went to Goodwill and were able to find everything they would need to make the costumes they had in mind. I think they’ve turned out great! We’ve carved several pumpkins and are just really having a blast with this holiday.
All you little ones be careful and keep an eye out for cars when you are out and about trick-or-treating on Thursday night. Wear bright clothes, put reflective tape on costumes, wear glow sticks, carry a flashlight, and stay in groups! Safety first! Happy Halloween!!
If I have left anyone or anything out, just let me know and I will be glad you get you next time. I hope everyone has a healthy and happy week. If you would like to contact me, feel free to give me a call or you may email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
