Committee seeking local success stories

The Mountain Heritage Festival Committee is asking for submissions of names and a brief history of people who were reared in Letcher County and have achieved their highest dreams in their chosen area of expertise.

Plans are underway to recognize them during the 2014 festival. Submissions should be in by August 11.

The theme for the 32nd Mountain Heritage Festival is Letcher County : Where the highest of dreams begin.

The grand marshals are Destin Kincer and Dr. Shelba Profitt.

Destin Kincer is Miss Kentucky USA 2014 and Miss Mountain Heritage 2011. She is a 2011 Letcher County Central High School graduate and a student at the University of Kentucky. She is the daughter of Stephen and Mitzi Kincer of Whitesburg.

Dr. Profitt is one of four pioneers in the Aviation Hall of Fame. Dr. Profitt made her accomplishments in design and engineering. She was a member of the Werner Von Braun missile development team at NASA. She later held key positions at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala..

From NASA she moved to development work on advance tactical missile systems. At the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command, she was the first woman to join the Senior Executive Service. In 2001 she had total responsibility for developing air and missile systems as Acting Program Executive Officer.

Dr. Profitt is the daughter of the late Stanley and Frankie Collins Proffitt of Whitesburg. She was graduated from Whitesburg High School in 1954 and Centre College in 1957.
